Portsmouth is the United Kingdom's only island city, being mainly located on Portsea Island. As a result, the Portsmouth ferry port is one of the busiest in the UK carrying approximately 2.2 million people per year. It is a home to the Royal Navy, the University of Portsmouth and to Portsmouth Football Club, founded in 1898. Portsmouth has been used in a number of films and television shows such as Tomorrow Never Dies with James Bond, Oscar and Lucinda, and Mr. Bean.

City Highlights

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
The Historic Dockyard is a great place to experience 800 years of naval history surrounded by working docks and historic buildings. Portsmouth Harbour’s leading attraction also includes the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Action Stations and Harbour Tours. The dockyard is home to many world famous historic ships such as HMS Victory (the Royal Navy's most famous warship) and HMS Warrior (the world’s first iron-hulled, armoured warship).

Spinnaker Tower
Overlooking Portsmouth Harbour at Gunwharf Quays, the Spinnaker Tower is the tallest publicly accessible structure in the UK and Portsmouth’s biggest landmark, with fantastic views of Portsmouth, Portsmouth Harbour and across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Nightlife:

Since the heady days of the dance music explosion of the early nineties, Portsmouth has gained a well-deserved reputation as one of the UK's favourite clubbing destinations. Whatever floats your musical boat, you will find it in one of the dozens of bars or numerous nightclubs throughout the city.

If you're more interested in drama, opera, dance or live music, you won’t be disappointed with what Portsmouth has to offer. Both the Kings Theatre and the New Theatre Royal offer a varied programme throughout the year; for live music Portsmouth Guildhall, the Wedgewood Rooms and the Cellars at Eastney are just some of the many venues.
