Learn French in Annecy

Annecy, also known as “the Little Venice”, is a magnificent lakeside canal town with lots of history. The town centre is full of life with its shops, restaurants and cafés. Annecy attracts tourists from all over the world who enjoy the nearby lake and its beaches as well as the multitude of outdoor sports activities organised in the region (e.g. hiking, cycling, skiing and paragliding).

City Highlights

Annecy is located between Geneva and Chambéry. Thus its history was strongly influenced by these two towns between the 10th and the 19th century. Starting as the capital of Geneva, after the demise of the counts of Geneva at the beginning of the 15th century, Annecy became integrated into the House of Savoy's possessions. With the advance of Calvinism in 16th century, Annecy became the centre for the Counter-Reformation.

The Palais de l'Isle

Palais de l'Isle is a castle in the centre of the Thiou - a canal traversing the town centre. Built in 1132, it was the primary residence of the Lord of Annecy as early as the 12th century and later became the Count of Geneva’s administrative headquarters. It then became a courthouse, a mint, and finally a jail. The Palais de l'Ile was classified as a Historical Monument in 1900 and today houses a local history museum.

Annecy Cathedral

Annecy Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral and a national monument. It was built at the beginning of the 16th century by Jacques Rossel as a chapel for a Franciscan priory. During the French Revolution the building was used as a temple of the Goddess Reason and raised to the status of a cathedral in 1822.

Olympic Games Candidate City

On June 22, 2010 the International Olympic Committee announced Annecy as one of three candidate cities for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games along with Munich in Germany and Pyeongchang in South Korea. If chosen, Annecy will be the fourth French city to host the Winter Olympic Games after Chamonix, Grenoble and Albertville.
