Rouen is the historic capital city of Normandy, located in northern France on the River Seine, and currently the capital of the Haute-Normandie region. Once one of the largest and most prosperous cities of medieval Europe, Rouen was one of the capitals of the Anglo-Norman dynasties, which ruled both England and large parts of modern France from the 11th to the 15th century. It was in Rouen that Joan of Arc was burnt in 1431.

City highlights

Rouen is known for its Notre Dame cathedral, with its Tour de Beurre (butter tower). The cathedral was the subject of a series of paintings by Claude Monet, some of which are exhibited in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Other famous structures include the Gros Horloge astronomical clock (dating back to the 16th century), the Gothic Church of Saint Maclou (15th century); the Tower Jeanne d'Arc, where Joan of Arc was brought in 1431 to be threatened with torture; the Church of Saint Ouen (12th–15th century); the Palais de Justice, which was once the seat of the Parliament of Normandy and the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics which contains a splendid collection of pottery and porcelain for which Rouen was renowned during the 16th to 18th centuries. Rouen is also noted for its surviving half-timbered buildings.

There are many museums in Rouen: Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, an art museum with pictures of well-known painters such as Claude Monet and Géricault; Musée maritime fluvial et portuaire, a museum on the history of the port of Rouen and navigation; Musée des antiquités, an art and history museum with antique or gothic works; Musée de la céramique, Musée Le Secq des Tournelles and many more.

The Jardin des Plantes de Rouen is a notable botanical garden dating back to 1840 in its present form. It was previously owned by Scottish banker John Law and was the site of several historic balloon ascents.

The weather:

It is never very cold in Rouen even in winter, when it’s usually wet and windy, so for winter months make sure that you have a warm waterproof. Summers are usually pleasantly warm but one never knows so bring a coat just in case.

Transport, lunch and pocket money

Rouen has a tram system which we call «le metrobus », there is a stop just 8 minutes walk from the school which goes to the centre of town. 4 bus lines go past the Rue Du Mail, where the school is located, and many host families are within walking distance.

On the first Monday of your stay, we will take you around the town so that you get your bearings. We will show you the principal sights as well as useful information such as where and how to buy a metro ticket or season card. A ticket costs 1.50 Euros. A pack of 10 costs 10.50 Euros. You can also buy season cards for longer stays.

Lunch is not included in the programme unless you come as part of a group. Students can buy lunch from the many bakeries (sandwiches/quiches/rolls) just 4 minutes walk from the school. There are many “Bistrot”s near the school where you can buy sandwiches or hot snacks/quick meals. You will also find McDonalds/Quick burgers and other fast food outlets 5 minutes away.

In the school we have a hot and cold drinks vending machines and a snacks (crisps and sweets) vending machine.

Accommodation

We can arrange several types of accommodation, including hotels, student residences and apartments, but we recommend host families, especially for the initial part of your stay in Rouen.

Our selected home-stay families understand the importance of their role in making your visit both successful and enjoyable. They will not only introduce you to the French way of life and help you to practise the language, but will also give you a taste of our delicious regional specialities.

For students preferring to stay in student residence accommodation there are three possibilities in Rouen: a brand new residence near the school offers a superior standard and services including breakfast while the others are in the centre of town and offer comfortable accommodation with private bathroom facilities. We can also arrange furnished apartments for those wishing a different self-catering option.

If you wish to book alternative accommodation, we are happy to provide the information needed. For details of our furnished apartments and luxury residences with swimming pool please contact us. We can also organise a wide range of hotels and studios. Information is available on request.

Host families

The host families provide:
  • Bath towels and bedding
  • Breakfast and dinner during the week and full board at the week-end
  • Single rooms
  • A place with a desk and a chair where you can work and study quietly
  • Use of a bathroom
  • Laundry
  • In most cases families will give students a key for the duration of their stay

Our hospitality officer visits families regularly to check on all aspects of your stay with them. We make every effort to make the perfect match between students and families. Students with dietary or other particular requirements need only to ask and we will find the right family for them.

Staying with a host family:
  • You will be staying as part of a family to learn more about the French way of life but remember that you should respect your host family’s times for meals and their home
  • If you have arranged to go out please remember to tell them and tell them if you are going to be late in
  • Your host family will communicate with you in French at all times so that you make progress quickly. Don’t worry - you will soon get the hang of it!

If you have any problems or questions relating to your host family just tell Véronique, who is in charge of bookings and host families in Rouen, or if you feel like you need additional feedback, give the consultant who arranged your booking a quick call.

Helpful hint: think about bringing a small typical gift from your country to give to your host family and also bring some photos of your own family or town as this will give you something to start the conversation going!
